Symphytum officinale

Common Names: Knitbone, Boneset, Healing Herb

Description: Comfrey root is the powerhouse of the plant, a thick, dark, and highly mucilaginous taproot. For centuries, it has been a cornerstone of traditional herbalism, earning its nickname "Knitbone" for its remarkable affinity for the body's deeper tissues. This product is for external use only and must never be ingested by humans.

Energetics: Cool, Moist

Key Constituents: Comfrey root is exceptionally rich in allantoin, a compound that supports healthy cell growth and is responsible for the herb's powerful regenerative properties. It also contains high levels of mucilage, providing a soothing and moisturizing effect. The root contains a higher concentration of pyrrolizidine alkaloids than the leaf, which makes it unsafe for internal use.

Traditional Uses (External Only): Comfrey root is traditionally used in salves, oils, and compresses to aid the body's natural healing of:

  • Sprains, bruises, and strains

  • Broken bones (once set by a professional)

  • Deep tissue inflammation and swelling

Preparation (External Use Only): Comfrey root should only be prepared for external application. It is not suitable for teas, tinctures, or any other internal preparation.

  • Oil Infusion: Gently infuse the dried, chopped root in a carrier oil (like olive oil) to create a potent base for balms, salves, and massage oils.

  • Poultice or Compress: Grind the dried root into a powder and combine with hot water to form a paste, which can be applied to the skin.

Disclaimer: This product is for external use only and should not be ingested. Do not use on broken or abraded skin. Consult with a qualified healthcare professional before using any herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have any pre-existing medical conditions.
