Althaea officinalis

Common Names: Marshmallow Leaf

Description: While the root of the Marsh Mallow plant is famously celebrated, the velvety leaves also hold their own unique and gentle properties. This product features the whole dried leaves of Althaea officinalis, revered for their soft texture and demulcent action. The leaves offer a milder, more palatable alternative for infusions while providing a similarly soothing effect on the body's mucous membranes.

Energetics: Cool, Moist

Key Constituents: Marsh Mallow leaf contains mucilage, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. While the mucilage content is lower than in the root, it is still sufficient to provide a gentle, soothing quality, making the leaf ideal for delicate applications.

Traditional Uses: Marsh Mallow leaf is most often used to soothe the respiratory and urinary systems. Its traditional uses include:

  • Calming a dry, irritating cough and soothing a sore throat

  • Aiding in healthy urinary tract function

  • As a mild demulcent for the digestive system

  • An excellent, gentle base for many herbal tea blends

Preparation: Marsh Mallow leaf can be prepared as a hot or cold infusion.

  • Hot Infusion (Tea): Steep 1-2 teaspoons of the dried leaf in a cup of hot water for 5-10 minutes.

  • Cold Infusion: Place the leaves in a jar of cold water and let them infuse for a few hours to a day for a richer, more mucilaginous liquid.
