Botanical Name: Solidago spp.

Common Names: Solidago, Goldenrod

Description: Solidago, commonly known as Goldenrod, is a tall and beautiful plant, a staple of late summer landscapes. Despite its vibrant appearance, it is often unfairly blamed for seasonal allergies (a reputation that belongs to ragweed). In truth, Solidago is a premier herbal ally, particularly for the urinary system. Its feathery, golden flowers and leaves are a gentle but effective tonic for the kidneys and a classic remedy for urinary tract health.

Energetics: Cool, Dry, Astringent

Key Constituents: Solidago contains a rich array of flavonoids (including rutin and quercetin), saponins, and tannins. The saponins are particularly responsible for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, while the flavonoids contribute to its use for seasonal allergies.

Traditional Uses: Solidago is a cornerstone of urinary and kidney health. It is traditionally used to:

  • Support healthy kidney function and act as a gentle diuretic

  • Soothe and provide relief for urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Help with the passage of kidney stones

  • Calm symptoms of seasonal allergies, particularly when the sinuses are hot and irritated

Preparation: Solidago is most often prepared as a tea or tincture.

  • Tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of hot water for 10-15 minutes.

  • Tincture: A concentrated liquid extract can be made for convenient use.
