Botanical Name: Plantago ovata
Common Names: Psyllium, Blond Psyllium, Isabgol, Fleawort
Description: Psyllium is derived from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, a small annual herb native to India and the Mediterranean region. Renowned worldwide as a premier natural source of soluble dietary fiber, psyllium husk acts as a gentle, non-irritating bulk-forming laxative. When mixed with water or digestive fluids, its high mucilage content expands into a smooth, gel-like matrix. This comforting mucilage gently sweeps the digestive tract, promotes regular and comfortable elimination, and supports healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels already within the normal range.
Energetics: Cool, Moist, Neutral, Bulking, Demulcent
Key Constituents: The primary therapeutic compound in Psyllium is soluble mucilage fiber (concentrated heavily in the outer husk), composed of complex polysaccharides (arabinoxylans) that do not break down in the upper GI tract. It also contains trace lipids, proteins, and aucubin (an iridoid glycoside).
Traditional Uses: Psyllium is a foundational ally for gastrointestinal health and metabolic balance. It is traditionally used to:
-
Promote smooth, regular bowel movements and relieve occasional constipation safely and gently
-
Soothe and provide bulk for loose stools, helping to normalize and balance bowel transit time
-
Support healthy cholesterol levels by binding to fats and bile acids in the digestive tract
-
Support healthy blood sugar balance by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates
Preparation: Because psyllium absorbs liquid rapidly and expands, proper mixing is essential.
-
Fiber Slurry / Drink: Stir 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk powder briskly into a full glass (8 to 12 ounces) of water or juice, mix thoroughly, and drink immediately, followed by an additional glass of water.
-
Capsules: Convenient encapsulated husk powder taken with ample fluids.

Warning: Always take psyllium with at least 8 ounces of liquid. Taking psyllium without enough fluid can cause the powder to swell in the throat or esophagus, creating a choking risk. Do not take immediately before bedtime or if you have difficulty swallowing, a bowel obstruction, or undiagnosed abdominal pain. Separate intake from medications by 1 to 2 hours.
